Kou is a rare wood that was prized by Hawaiian royalty. It was used for canoes, furniture and household utensils. It grows in the coastal areas of Hawaii and produces fruit. It has brown hues and curl in the hardwood. The sapwood is a light tan with brown patterning. Kou can grow up to thirty-three feet but is typically about twenty feet in height. The largest threes are three feet in diameter.

Green serpentine (serpentinus) means serpent rock. It contains magnesium iron phyllosilicate along with nickel and cobalt. Serpentine can be green or brown. This serpentine is from Washington State. Cielo marble is from Mexico. It is white with gray streaks in various patterns. Copper is also inlayed. It is found in multiple states in the U.S. including Utah, Arizona, Montana, Michigan and New Mexico. Copper is very malleable and has a beautiful reddish-brown color that accents the Kou.

The finish contains three coats of Tung oil; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the wood. To maintain the beauty of the Kou avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel. Wood does expand and contract making it subject to slight checking, cracking and movement. To minimize wood movement cracking, checking or slight warping and for polishing use a beeswax solution such as Howard Feed-N-Wax or Artisan Lemon Oil Wax is good. Just follow the directions from the manufacturer.
