Claro Walnut Burl, Juglans hindsi, is found in Northern California and Oregon. A variation is also found in the eastern United States. Claro walnut is a hybrid of black walnut, English walnut and sometimes Bastogne walnut. The wood is marbled with violet, brown and black streaks swirling around burl “eyes”. A burl is composed of a tree's bud tissue that has not sprouted into foliage or grown into a twig. As it grows, it incorporates the tree's undeveloped buds that surround it and folds them in creating a unique mosaic pattern. This burl is from Oregon.

The stone inlay is green serpentine (serpentinus) means serpent rock. It contains magnesium iron phyllosilicate along with nickel and cobalt. Serpentine can be green or brown. This serpentine is from Washington State north of Spokane.

The bicycle pedals are from the Phoenix Bicycle Company whose origins date back to 1958 and Shanghai, China. The pedals were attached to metal tubing for a unique set of legs complimenting the beautiful Claro Walnut Burl and green serpentine.

The finish contains five coats of Tung oil; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the wood. To maintain the beauty of the Claro walnut burl avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel. Wood does expand and contract making it subject to slight checking, cracking, and movement. To minimize wood movement cracking, checking or slight warping and for polishing use a beeswax solution such as Howard Feed-N-Wax or Artisan Lemon Oil Wax is good. Just follow the directions from the manufacturer.
