The table base for "Home Plate" is Boxelder, Acer Negundo, is a species of maple found across the U.S. and Canada. It is often referred to as Manitoba maple. The tree can grow to a height of 85 feet. The sapwood is white but typically has a hue of yellow, green or a combination of both. The pink and red referred to as “red stain” is produced when they tree is wounded. It inhibits the growth of a fungus, fusarium reticulatum, which tries to colonize the boxelder.
The baseballs are real as are the bats used for legs. There is an option glass top which allows more day-to-day use of the table.
The finish contains three coats of Tung oil; sanded after each coat. Tung oil brings out the unique characteristics of the boxelder. To maintain the beauty of the boxelder avoid using cleaning solutions instead use water in a damp rag. Remove the excess moisture with a clean towel. For polishing a beeswax solution such as Howard Feed-N-Wax or Artisan Lemon Oil Wax is good. Just follow the directions from the manufacturer.
